What MTPL covers — and what it does not

What MTPL covers — and what it does not

A clear line between liability to others and your own losses. Which events the compulsory policy pays, where a deductible applies, and when you need extra cover.

The most common disappointment after a crash is: “But I had insurance.” In most of those stories the policy was MTPL while the client expected CASCO. Here is a calm map of cover without marketing promises.

Insurance protection shield
MTPL protects your wallet from other people’s claims, not the paint on your car.

When the insurer pays

Classic scenario: you fail to yield, damage a wing, bumper or headlamp. The injured party records the event, the insurer assesses the loss and arranges payment or repair within the limit. The same applies to a pedestrian if fault is established.

Cover works in Ukraine for the policy term. Travel abroad needs a Green Card — a different product with a different geography.

What MTPL does not close

  • repairs to your car, even if you are not at fault and the other driver is unknown
  • theft, hail, a falling tree, fire without an at-fault accident
  • fines, moral damage outside the policy, intentional acts
Damaged car
A scratch on your own door after a parking incident is CASCO territory, not MTPL.

Limits and extra liability

The law sets minimum insured sums. For a serious crash with several cars or injuries the minimum may not be enough. A voluntary liability top-up raises the ceiling and is relatively inexpensive.

Before a long trip or a full car of passengers, look at the limit, not only the premium. The price difference is often smaller than one body panel on a business-class car.

What to do right after the event

Stop, switch on hazard lights, call the police and medics if needed. Photograph both cars, plates, the scene and the damage. Do not sign a European accident statement if you are unsure about the diagram. Notify the insurer within the contract deadline — delay can become a formal dispute.

Keep witness names and the other party’s contacts. The fuller the file, the faster the payout moves.
